What is Safe Rates?
Safe Rates is a legal and regulatory framework that makes clients (or economic employers) responsible for fair rates of pay, working conditions and safety throughout the supply chains they control.
Clients at the top of supply chains are financially squeezing transport contracts through deregulated competitive tendering. These economic employers are awarding contracts to ‘lowest cost’ transport operators with little or no regard to how costs are saved.
It means transport companies are forced to undercut each other to win work. For operators to survive, pay, conditions and safety are all cut, including truck maintenance and fatigue management. It results in transport workers pressured to work harder, longer and faster to make ends meet.

What does good work look like for truck drivers?
We want to know what truck drivers’ wages and conditions are like right now and what you think they really should be like, to make it a really good job. This survey is being conducted across the transport industry and could lead to the establishment of new, higher standards of work. Truck drivers deserve to be recognised and rewarded for their essential work, and better conditions will help us attract and retain drivers in Aotearoa too. Plus, you’ll go into the draw to win one of three $80 Prezzy cards!
“Safe Rates in Aotearoa would simultaneously lower the road toll and lift truck drivers out of financial hardship. It’s a win-win.”
— Wayne Hill, truck driver for 20 years
